Royal Dornoch

Royal Dornoch is widely regarded as one of the finest and most natural links courses in the world. Situated on the shores of the Dornoch Firth in the remote Scottish Highlands, this masterpiece has inspired course designers for over a century. Tom Watson famously called it "the most fun I have ever had on a golf course," and Donald Ross, who grew up as a greenkeeper here, took its design principles to America where he created Pinehurst No. 2 and over 400 other courses.

The Championship Course features elevated tees and raised plateau greens that offer breathtaking views across the firth to the mountains beyond. These elevated, undulating greens are a hallmark of Dornoch and demand precise approach play with the ball landing softly on the correct tier. The design has influenced countless courses worldwide, and the natural routing through the dunes creates a seamless flow that feels as though the course has existed since the beginning of time.

Despite its remote location in the far north of Scotland — or perhaps because of it — Royal Dornoch consistently ranks among the top five courses on the planet. The journey north through the dramatic Highland scenery is rewarded with an unforgettable golfing experience in one of Scotland's most beautiful and unspoiled landscapes, where the golf is pure, the welcome is warm, and the experience is utterly authentic.

Notable Holes

A selection of the most memorable and challenging holes on the course

2

Ord

184 yardsPar 3

A beautiful and demanding par 3 played from an elevated tee to a raised plateau green with stunning views across the Dornoch Firth. The green slopes away on all sides, making club selection absolutely critical. Anything short will roll back down the slope, while anything long faces a treacherous downhill chip back to the putting surface.

5

Hilton

354 yardsPar 4

A short but highly deceptive par 4 with a blind tee shot over a ridge to a hidden fairway below. The approach to the raised plateau green, named after Harold Hilton who won the 1911 British Amateur here, is one of the most demanding on the course. The green sits at an angle and falls away sharply on all sides, requiring perfect distance control.

6

Whinny Brae

163 yardsPar 3

Tom Watson's favourite hole at Dornoch and one of the most photographed par 3s in golf. A stunning downhill shot with the Dornoch Firth providing a spectacular backdrop and golden gorse framing the green. The wind swirling off the water makes club selection extremely difficult, and the small green is tightly guarded by bunkers and natural hollows.

8

Dunrobin

437 yardsPar 4

A magnificent par 4 running along the coastline with views to Dunrobin Castle in the distance. The drive must find a narrow fairway corridor between gorse-covered dunes, before an exacting approach to a green perched above the beach. The wind off the Firth of Dornoch is a constant factor, and the hole epitomizes Highland links golf at its finest.

14

Foxy

445 yardsPar 4

Considered by many to be one of the greatest natural golf holes ever created. A sweeping dogleg right with no bunkers — the terrain alone provides all the challenge needed. The drive must be positioned perfectly on the left side of the fairway to open up the approach to a green that sits naturally in a hollow. Pure, strategic, timeless golf architecture.

17

Valley

405 yardsPar 4

A dramatic hole played from an elevated tee high in the dunes down into a valley before rising sharply to a plateau green. The views from the tee across the Dornoch Firth to the mountains beyond are spectacular. The approach must be judged perfectly to carry the slope and reach the elevated green, with anything short rolling back down into the valley.
